Circular Biorefinery · Zero Landfill · Carbon Verified

South Africa's worst weeds.
Turned into revenue.

Invasive alien plants cost South Africa billions in ecological damage annually. EcoDelta's Weed-to-Value biorefinery converts Category 1 and 2 invasives into biochar, bioenergy, animal feed, tannins, compost, and verified carbon credits — turning a national crisis into a circular economy opportunity.

THE FEEDSTOCK SPECIES

Six invasives. Zero waste.

EcoDelta's biorefinery is designed around South Africa's six most abundant and ecologically damaging invasive alien plant species. Each species generates a distinct set of valuable outputs — meaning clearing operations are economically self-sustaining rather than a cost centre.

OUTPUT STREAMS

One biomass stream. Six revenue outputs.

Every kilogram of invasive biomass entering EcoDelta's biorefinery exits as one of six value-bearing products — or as a verified carbon credit for avoided landfill emissions.

SOIL AMENDMENT
Biochar
High-porosity biochar for agricultural soil amendment, carbon sequestration, and water retention. IBI-certified grades available.
$300–900/tonne
ENERGY
Bioenergy pellets
Densified biomass pellets for industrial heat and power. Consistent calorific value from blended invasive feedstocks.
$80–150/tonne
TANNING & ADHESIVE
Wattle tannin
Condensed tannin extract from black wattle bark — used in leather tanning, wood adhesives, and industrial applications.
$600–1,200/tonne
AGRICULTURE
Compost & vermicompost
Certified organic compost from mixed invasive biomass — bagged and bulk supply for agricultural and horticultural markets.
$80–300/tonne
LIVESTOCK
Animal feed supplement
Dried and processed water hyacinth as a low-cost protein and mineral supplement for cattle and small stock.
$50–120/tonne
CARBON MARKET
Verified carbon credits
Avoided landfill emissions and sequestration credits from biochar permanence — Verra VCS verified, bundled with ESG documentation.
$10–50/tCO₂e

THE BIOREFINERY FLOW

How the circular loop works.

The Weed-to-Value model is circular by design — clearing generates biomass, biomass generates products and credits, credits and products fund further clearing. Municipal and agricultural partners provide access; EcoDelta structures, processes, and monetises.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Common questions from landowners and partners.

We have significant invasive alien infestation on our land. How do we engage EcoDelta?
Contact us with your location, approximate land area, and the primary invasive species present. EcoDelta will conduct a desktop assessment and propose either a clearing partnership — where we manage clearing operations and share revenue from outputs — or a biomass offtake arrangement where you manage clearing and we purchase the harvested biomass.
Can municipalities partner with EcoDelta for invasive clearing on public land?
Yes — this is one of EcoDelta's priority partnership models. Municipalities provide access and compliance support; EcoDelta structures the clearing operation, registers carbon credits, processes the biomass, and shares revenue with the municipality. This converts a municipal cost centre into a revenue-generating ecological programme.
Is wattle tannin extract a commodity or a specialty product?
Wattle tannin extract is an established industrial commodity with a significant global market in leather tanning and wood adhesives — South Africa is historically one of the world's leading producers. EcoDelta's biorefinery approach maximises extraction yield and produces both standard and speciality-grade tannin fractions for higher-margin applications.
What Working for Water compliance does EcoDelta's model align with?
EcoDelta's clearing methodology is designed to align with South Africa's Working for Water programme requirements and NEMBA regulations governing Category 1 invasive species. We work with registered contractors and maintain full compliance documentation. Revenue-sharing structures can be designed to complement existing Working for Water grant funding where applicable.
